Finding decent free applications through Apple’s app store can sometimes be a daunting task. The applications keep piling up and Apple has yet redesign the app store to make it a more efficient process. Many times I have found myself searching for applications by name and still did not retrieve the results I was looking for.
With this in mind I decided to hunt down some free Twitter Iphone Apps and test them out for this post.
NatsuLion: This is a fairly decent iPhone Twitter application. It doesn’t have a lot to offer, beyond the basics basics. The design is simple and to the point which allows you to quickly switch from your timeline, your reply’s, favorites and direct messages. After testing it for a few days, I did notice that the timeline hangs a bit when you attempt to refresh it too quickly.

- Post a message
- Create a favorite
- Replies including messages contain @ are emphasized
- Input support for @ID. By tapping “Reply” button, @ID apears in the message input field
- Manage unread tweets
- Display user timeline (@ID)
- “Pair timeline”: to show tweet conversation (@ID1 + @ID2)
- Build-in web browser: to quick look the web link
Simplytweet Lite
The lite version of Simply Tweet allows you to perform most of the operations of NatsuLion, with a few added bonuses. The interface design is slightly more appeasing and each tweet is separated with a smoothly toned gradient talk bubble. As each new tweet runs down your home feed a tiny blue dot marks all the fresh tweets allowing you to quickly separate the new from the old. What really stood out for me with this app was the search functionality. Not only was it extremely fast but it also allowed you to bookmark your searches for later queries.

TweetDeck for the iPhone
Probably one of my personal favorites (I am slightly bias from using the desktop version) , the TweetDeck for the iPhone offers you most of the functionality of its desktop counterpart. You can manage all aspects of your twitter account(s) share photos via YFrog and Twitpic, shake your iPhone to receive updates, find current twitter trends, create groups and more. Probably one of the more exciting functions of this application- is it’s ability to sync your existing TweetDeck columns from the desktop application.
Options Noted by Creator:
- Tweet directly from your iPhone or iPod Touch.
- Organise and update Facebook.
- Upload video direct to Facebook and 12seconds.
- Collect tweets in your immediate area based on geolocation.
- Manage multiple Twitter accounts.
- Cross post to multiple accounts, including Facebook.
- Turn popular twitter trends into search columns.
- Reply to tweets and send direct messages. Reply-to-all as well.
- Easily re-tweet messages.
- View notifications for new tweets received.
- Continuously sync between your desktop and iPhone.
- Create Groups to easily follow all your friends.
- Follow topics in real-time with saved searches.
- Share photos with Twitpic, YFrog and now TweetPhoto.
- Shorten links with your favourite URL shortener, now including bit.ly support too.
- Follow and un-follow people.
- Shake your iPhone to refresh columns.
- Send tweets as email (3.0+).
- Recent hash tags are remembered for repeated use.
- Choose between a light or dark theme.
Twinkle:
This application was a favorite of many people due to its trendy look, but it doesn’t offer very many functions for Twitter. When you first open the application you are forced to create a
Tapulous account in order to access your Twitter Feed. This becomes a bit of a process – as you have to validate the email used to create the account before using the app.
If you are looking for something that does not have all the bells and whistles of TweetDeck or enjoy using the Tapulous network then this may be the app your are looking for. It should also be worth mentioning that Twinkle offers Facebook Connectivity, which allows you to view your home feed, ‘like’ pictures and comments as well as leave comments.
Options Noted by Creator:
- Discover, connect, and send messages to people nearby
- Upload photos and update your Twitter account
- Contact old friends and make new ones
- Landscape map feed
- Built-in minibrowser
- Blocking
- Lots of other cool new tricks
Twitterrific: This is another twitter application that I found to be quite useful. The GUI ( graphical user interface ) is very sleek and visually appealing and also offers you an option (in the top right corner of the your home feed) to quickly increase or decrease the size of your font. Some of the navigational features may take you a moment to figure out, due to the use of unconventional icons, but once you get it this down pat your are ready to begin blasting out those tweets.
Options Noted by Creator:
- Special detail view for showing more tweet information
- Built-in mini-browser for displaying links and @screen_names
- Nearby tweets are highlighted with a link to Maps
- Built-in hints to help you learn quickly
Echofon for Twitter (Twitterfon): Even though this is an application that is completely free, it comes with a lot of great features you may find useful, and it can rival several of the alternatives that have a price attached to them. The search option gives you the choice to search for the trends and searches based on location – as well as bookmark your regular searches. The push notifications are an added plus if you find yourself in dire need to be notified when new tweets arrive. Current Twitter Trends can be located by tapping the lighting bolt in the upper right corner of the search view.
Options Noted by Creator:
- Rich Text Timeline
- Full-Screen TwitPic
- Twitter Trends
- Video Upload
- Read it Later
- Preview Tiny URLs
- Conversation View
- Push Notifications from Echofon
- Sync with Echofon for Firefox/Mac

Great write up Michael very thorough , I personally only use the tweetdeck on the iphone, because it has some many things in common with the full size program.

Very thoughtful review of some gr8t iphone apps, and most importantly they are free. Have you ever used twittie2, it’s not free but highly worth the 3 bones.
Ty & Yes, I really enjoy using tweetie2, I am a bit of an application geek, so I am always testing and using multiple applications.
