If you look back on the short history of Twitter, 2007 was definitely one of the big years! However, that’s not to say that 2009 and any future years will be small by any means. But 2007 was different. Known as a micro-blogging site as well as a social networking platform, Twitter grew exponentially during that first quarter and hasn’t slowed down since. Today, Twitter is used by many companies, online services, and is evolving everyday. Because so many changes come with growth, here’s a look back at some of the cool, original uses of Twitter.
Qwitter
At one time, Twitter was used to help you live longer. Using a free social tool known as Qwitter, you could quit smoking. The tool helped users record progress and keep track of how many cigarettes were smoked each day. Additionally, you could have a journal and get support by others in your same situation. Essentially, you’d gain followers that were also trying to quit smoking.
Remember the Milk
Much like a “honey do” list, Remember the Milk was a tool that helped you manage, assign, and get reminders for the tasks you love to forget. Never again will you forget to take out the trash, mow the lawn, or drop the kids off at school with the Remember the Milk tool. The only problem seemed to be remembering to check Remember the Milk!
Since then, this service has tapped into the wealth of available social media platforms as well as smartphones.
Botanicalls
Similar to Remember the Milk, Botanicalls was designed to help you to remember to water your plants. How many times have you killed a houseplant by dehydrating it – probably more times than you can count. That’s where Botanicalls comes in. It’s a do-it-yourself tool that helps your plants live a little longer. They’ll tweet you for water, and when it gets some, it’ll thank you!
Foamee
The words “I owe you a beer” have probably fallen from your lips once or twice. But, do you actually ever follow through on that promise? Chances are, probably not. With Foamee, Twitter helps you remember who you might owe a beer to – or even a cup of coffee. The way it works is that your message is sent to a Twitter user, but it is also displayed in your Foamee’s Pub section. This will keep your debt in check.
Twitter Answers
If you were ever desperately seeking answers, Twitter Answers was your saving grace. This little tool kicked in no matter where you were or what you needed. Simply ask a question and you shall receive – an answer that is! The answers were provided by other Twitter users and can be used from either the computer or cell phone.
Early on Twitter was used for a bunch of different things, and it still is. Some of the tools and applications are just plain silly while others can make someone’s day so much better. As Twitter grows and becomes even more of an essential communications platform, we’ll see many more tools and applications come and go. It’s always fun to look back and reminisce about the apps of yore.
