Sponsored Ads on Twitter – A good thing or not?

Sponsored Ads on Twitter – A good thing or not?

With so many people joining up with Twitter sponsored ads had to come sometime. Tweeters seem to be of two minds about the whole concept.

How it works:

You sign up with a company like Magpie or IZEA and choose to put in a number of sponsored tweets on your Twitter account. The company then pays you for each click on that tweet- (Pay Per Tweet). It is a requirement that the #spon is used.

If you are a frequent Twitter user this could be a great idea right? Well maybe or maybe not. There are obviously pros and cons that revolve around the whole advertising issue.

On the negative side:

Many people get highly annoyed at having advertising thrown up in their faces. For this reason, if you were to choose to go with sponsored advertising you run the risk of many of your followers choosing to unfollow you.
People very simply feel used when their ‘friends’ try to get them to buy something. Experienced bloggers know too that many people will simply switch off their site if it is covered in advertising.
Most tweeters, especially those who have been on Twitter for a long time are disgusted in the thought of their favorite social networking site becoming a giant advertising billboard. It is supposed to be for the free exchange of information, ideas and well – socializing.
Every one hates a spammer!

On the positive side:

Why shouldn’t people be able to make a little, or a lot, of money? Done correctly this could be a lucrative little side venture that helps pay the internet bill.

Why deny the fact that advertising exists?

Many people use sponsored advertising on their blogs so why not Twitter?

Some people feel that using sponsored ads is at least honest and upfront.
People are constantly marketing on Twitter anyway.
Sponsored advertising simply cuts out the middle man. Rather than leading people through tweets to a sponsored blog or site (check out my blog) in the name of getting feedback at least you are being taken straight to the sponsor.
Isn’t it good that the internet can offer a way for the individual to be making some money from the big companies?

As always a person has the choice to click through or not. We watch TV and advertisements come on. We have the choice to watch them or not. Radio Stations use sponsored advertising, we can choose to listen or change channels.

Why is Twitter any different?

Whatever view you personally take on advertising it seems it is here to stay. I think the majority of people would like to see Twitter stay advertisement clean, but is it realistic? Though some people may not think so, the individual always has a choice. As time goes by the Tweeters will decide by either unfollowing anyone who is clearly advertising or by leaving Twitter altogether. What choice will you make?

I think it is okay as long as you don’t spam folks with tons of affiliate links or sponsered ads. I don’t think you will make a million dollars of it or anything but you ^_^
