Making an impression on Twitter can be simple, but not always. People are looking for different things. If you have ever wondered why a fellow tweeter is now following you it is probably for one of these reasons. (These ‘look -for’ attributes are not in any particular order.)

1. You have something to say but aren’t always shouting about it.
This can be a balancing act sometimes. People want to hear what you have to say and know you have an opinion. Having an opinion is different to being opinionated though.
2. You have similar interests to others.
If you are using Twitter Search, it is easy to find people who are interested in the same topics as you. If you have placed your areas of interest in your profile (and you should have) then it is easy for others to find you and then decide to follow you.
3. You show some personality.
Personality is what makes you a people magnet. Warmth, empathy, and humor all come through in your tweets. Yes it can show through in 140 characters. Use your Twitter profile too.
4. Your tweets and keywords identify you as a possible potential customer.
Marketers are always on the lookout for potential customers or clients. While this can be annoying, they may actually have something you are looking for too. Obviously if they are a spammer, you are not going to link to their site. Just don’t follow them. If they are really bad you can block them.
5. They know you. Sometimes a long lost school mate may find you in a search.
Someone you once had coffee with may have come across your tweets. Most people will choose to follow someone they have had some kind of acquaintance with.
6. You happened to make a tweet on a particular topic.
Some people, especially those new to Twitter will simply find a page of recent tweets and decide to follow everyone who made a comment.
7. You look like an easy target.
Unfortunately there are a few creeps who try to use Twitter to get their rocks off. These kinds of perverts can often be identified in their profile by a lack of clothing, but not always. If you come across one of these, or are being hounded by them make sure to report and blacklist them.
8. Someone new to Twitter is using an automated program to follow as many people as possible in the hopes you will follow them back.
If you have an auto system set up too then you will be following them too. That is fine, but be aware that it is fairly obvious to others and it doesn’t mean you are popular.
9. They are genuinely interested in you or your company.
These of course are the ideal followers that businesses would like to see. It means you are doing something right.
10. You are just a wonderful person.
For whatever reasons someone chooses to follow you, you have the ability to check them out and decide whether or not to follow back.

I really enjoyed this list of reasons, I think people follow me because I am an easy target and spend too much cash in the cloud.
