With so many people becoming members of Twitter, both young and old, there are some people who wonder how they are going to be able to enjoy using it – and still keep themselves and their families safe. But even though you may be a member of Twitter, it does not mean that you have to compromise your safety or the safety of your family. Below are just a few tips that may help you to maintain peace of mind.

- Restrict Who is Able to see Your Tweets – The first thing that you want to do is to restrict who you are allowing to see your Tweets. You can go into your privacy settings and only allow the people- who you trust – see the Tweets that you are posting. Once you are comfortable with your followers, you may expand your list.

- Restrict Details When Not at Home – The second thing that you may want to be sure to do, is to restrict what you say when you aren’t at home. It’s not too hard to find out personal details about someone, and if criminals know that you are not at home they are going to take advantage of that knowledge. With the use of applications like TweetLater, you don’t even have to tell people that you went anywhere. You can schedule tweets to post – as need be – and tell them about the trip when you are back at home.

- Don’t Say Where You’re Headed – Along with not telling people that you are going to be away; you also don’t want to tell them where you are going on vacation. If they live in that area and you have posted a picture of yourself, they may use that to do you harm. Again, you can tell them about your trip when you return safely.

- Don’t Spill the Beans –The final thing that you want to do is to limit the posts that you make on Twitter to yourself. You don’t want to go blabbing about your friends and family unless you have their permission to do so. The last thing that you want to do is to risk someone you care about being harmed because you accidentally said that they were going on vacation.

Twitter is something that is a lot of fun and can help a lot of people, but it‘s important that you have fun doing it without risking the safety of your home and your family. Nothing is worth that, and with so many people on Twitter, you never can be certain if they are there dishonorable intentions.

With so many people losing their identity these days, of course you want to make sure that you never give out credit card information or your social security number over Twitter, no matter how well you trust your followers. Never tell them your address or your phone number; it may put you and your family in danger. Even though you know that you are harmless, the people that you are talking to on Twitter may not.
