Even though Twitter is fairly new, there are already people who have had success with marketing their business and products on it. However, there has also been quite a few people who have made some mistakes when it comes to marketing on Twitter. These mistakes have left them discouraged.

Here are four of the most common mistakes that people make when they are marketing on Twitter.

Following Without Being Followed – One of the biggest mistakes that people make when they are trying to market a business or product on Twitter is that they start following a lot of people who don’t have the slightest interest in following them. Follow people, yes, but space them out. If people know that you are pacing yourself, they may be more interested in following you.

Stuffing Your Profile – Another big mistake that people make when it comes to marketing on Twitter is that they stuff their url to their website in their profile so much that it occurs every other sentence. Use your profile to tell other people about yourself and don’t make it just a commercial for your business.

Using Tweets to sell – Just like you don’t want to use your profile as a commercial, you don’t want to sell on your tweets, either. If you simply use your tweets to advertise and sell your products, you are going to find that you are missing a great opportunity to show people what you know. Instead of using the tweets to sell your products, give them information that they can use.

Using Automation – The final mistake that people make when it comes to Twitter is that they have their don’t do anything manually, such as thanking someone for following them or using the auto-followback option. This tells people that you are too busy for them and that you really don’t care. That’s not the message that you want to send out to people that you hope will someday become your customers.

The good thing to do when it comes to marketing on Twitter is think about what you want when it comes to being marketed to on Twitter. You don’t want to just read advertisements, do you? And when you go and read someone’s profile, you don’t want to see a lot of blatant advertising, right? So why would you think that someone would want to read that on your Twitter page?

When you are using Twitter as a marketing tool, think about the things that you look for as a customer and what turns you off. This is what is going to help you figure out what is going to help you on your own Twitter account. Chances are if you like it, others are going to like it. If it’s something that you don’t like, chances are that the people that are going to follow you won’t like it either. Just as they say, you never get a second chance to get a first opinion, so make sure that it’s a good one.
